Ternary lithium polymer batteries are basically the same as lithium batteries, except that the electrolyte is a solid polymer instead of a liquid electrolyte.

The advantage of a lithium polymer battery is that it can be made at will, and it is relatively light because it contains no heavy metals and has a plastic casing that prevents electrolyte leakage.

Lithium battery manufacturers tell you that when the lithium battery cells are overcharged to a voltage higher than 4.2V, side effects will begin to occur. The higher the overcharge voltage, the higher the risk. When the voltage of the lithium cell is higher than 4.2V, the number of lithium atoms remaining in the positive electrode material is less than half, and the battery tends to collapse at this time, causing the battery to lose capacity. Assuming continuous charging, since the battery of the negative electrode is already full of lithium atoms, subsequent lithium metal will accumulate on the surface of the negative electrode material. These lithium atoms will grow dendrites from the negative electrode surface in the direction of lithium ions. These lithium metal crystals would cross the barrier, shorting the positive and negative electrodes. Sometimes the battery will explode before the short circuit occurs. This is because during the overcharge process, materials such as the electrolyte decompose to generate gas, causing the battery casing or pressure valve to bulge and rupture, allowing oxygen to enter and react with the lithium atoms accumulated on the surface of the negative electrode, which then explodes.


Therefore, when charging lithium batteries, an upper voltage limit must be set to take into account battery life, capacity and safety. The ideal upper limit for the charging voltage is 4.2V. Lithium batteries also have a lower voltage limit when they are discharged. When the battery voltage drops below 2.4V, some materials start to fail. And because the battery self-discharges, the longer it is left on, the lower the voltage. So don't put it at 2.4V to stop it when discharging. When the lithium battery is discharged from 3.0V to 2.4V, the released energy only accounts for about 3% of the battery capacity. Therefore, 3.0V is the ideal discharge cut-off voltage. During charging and discharging, in addition to voltage constraints, current constraints are also required. When the current is too large, the lithium ions will not have time to enter the battery and will accumulate on the surface of the material.
